Ainu is a language that is thought to be thousands of years old, this language was usually spoken in the northern parts of Japan. The Ainus were not treated well in Japan; they were forbidden from using their own language, and were forced to use Japanese names. The Ainu were treated terribly due to them being manual Laboured. Japan was also dying out due to political pressure from the central government, therefore the number of Ainu speakers died down through the 20th century, only making very few people fluent with the language.

During the year 1899, the Japanese government had announced and introduced a new policy. The assimilation of Ainu, also known as the Hokkaido Former Aborigines Protection Act. This specific Law strictly limited Ainu culture. Assimilating the Ainu culture to Wajin culture. They did this by educating the Ainu people Japanese language and Wajin customs. The Ainu people have been discriminated against by Japanese people. The Ainu’s also have been exploited economically and politically by the Japanese. It was not until May 1997 that the assimilation of Ainu was removed from the Japanese statue book. And it’s to be replaced by a new law, the new Ainu Cultural Promotion Law. This Law provides governmental financial support for teaching. It also helps promote and research Ainu culture.Till this day, the Ainus occasionally get neglected and ignored by some insensible Japanese politicians and ordinary citizens.
